Street Meals
helps alleviate hunger for the homeless population in Atlanta. Every Tuesday from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m., volunteers prepare meals at Kashi Atlanta. The next day at lunchtime, we distribute 350 meals or more in downtown Atlanta. Street Meals is supported by a dedicated corps of volunteers who are committed to seva - selfless service – as an extension of their yoga practice. Teaching people about the joy of community service is a part of our commitment.

We have just begun. We are working with different shelters and organizations with similar goals to expand the assistance available on our streets. We believe that there are no throw-away people.

We also need financial contributions. We can feed someone a good meal for $1.00, so no donation is too small or too large.

We need volunteers to help make and distribute meals, to organize pick-up and delivery of food donations, to pick up donations, and to shop for food that hasn’t been donated. You can also sign up to donate any of the items above, make cookies or muffins, get your employers to donate, or find us a source for bread, chips, drinks, and other food. Get involved and you really can make a difference. Learn to live from the heart and give from the heart.

The Word from the Streets - November 1, 2006

Namaste,

When we arrived at the shelter, it was pretty much vacant. Our Troy was there and told us that all the guys were down town.

There were festivities all day and night for and about the homeless. Woodruff park was packed full with booths, representing all the organizations that help support the homeless.

When we arrived, there was a huge line formed and the guys were going from table to table getting prepared food. We asked the church ladies if we could set up with them and they were thrilled to have us. It was a food extravaganza!

As the guys went through the line both the guys and the Kashi Atlanta team screamed with joy at seeing each other. All of our guys we see at the shelter were all outside on this gorgeous Fall day. Everyone was so bright and glowing and proud to claim us as theirs!! The faces were so bright and they eagerly posed with us for pictures.

Later that afternoon, they were all going to participate in a march through the downtown. It was a march to honor all of the homeless folks that have passed away. Many guys were holding up posters with pictures of their friends that they have lost.

When a homeless person passes and there isn’t any family member to claim them, they go in a graveyard in an unmarked grave, a forgotten soul. But, not by any of us or those they have left behind on the streets. Our hearts and theirs were a blaze this day. There is so much love that we share.
We are so blessed to know these angels of the streets of Atlanta.

In gratitude,
The Kashi Atlanta Ma Jaya’s Street Meals Team
