Street Meals helps alleviate hunger for the
homeless population in Atlanta. Every Tuesday from 6:30 -
8:30 p.m., volunteers prepare meals at Kashi Atlanta. The
next day at lunchtime, we distribute 350 meals or more in
downtown Atlanta. Street Meals is supported by a dedicated
corps of volunteers who are committed to seva - selfless service
as an extension of their yoga practice. Teaching people
about the joy of community service is a part of our commitment.
We have just begun. We are working with different shelters
and organizations with similar goals to expand the assistance
available on our streets. We believe that there are no throw-away
people.
We also need financial contributions. We can feed someone
a good meal for $1.00, so no donation is too small or too
large.
We need volunteers to help make and distribute meals, to organize
pick-up and delivery of food donations, to pick up donations,
and to shop for food that hasnt been donated. You can
also sign up to donate any of the items above, make cookies
or muffins, get your employers to donate, or find us a source
for bread, chips, drinks, and other food. Get involved and
you really can make a difference. Learn to live from the heart
and give from the heart.

The
Word from the Streets -
October 25, 2006
Namaste,
This week’s trip to the streets was another
beautiful experience. We had four new people with
us. One couple were from Brazil, the other two gals
we got from Hands on Atlanta. Everyone had such a
great time and we were blown away by the love they
experienced from our guys. They all remarked how beautiful
it was to see our guys file through the line with
big smiles on their faces. They told us that they
have served in other situations, but the way we and
the guys grabbed each other and hugged was new to
their eyes. The love and hugging is contagious.
The
shelter has started getting more crowed, as it gets
closer to the winter season. This shelter gets so
full during the cold months; sometimes it holds up
to 700 men! Every December we do a Holiday Street
Meals where we give the guys many wintertime necessities.
The holiday packages consist of blankets, chap sticks,
cough drops, winter socks, hats, gloves, nail clippers,
candy and home baked cookies. All of these items are
very appreciated by the guys. The cookies add a special
touch, knowing that someone baked them especially
for them. Year after year it gets bigger and bigger…
we have to use a U-haul to take it all out to the
streets. This year we will deliver the packages on
Saturday December 9th. On the Friday evening before,
we assemble them.
Our
new people got to meet some of our special folks today,
two of our amazing folks that changed their lives
around. Our friend Julia was at Woodruff Park. We
met her years ago. She was strung out on drugs, living
on the streets and very desperate. For years now,
she has been employed, has an apartment, is back with
her husband and has her kids back!!! She comes out
every few months to see us and say hello. Our other
friend is Mark Thomas…(who we talk a lot about!!!)
Mark continuously pulls himself up and out of life’s
tough times. He is an amazing man.
These
are just a few stories…there are so many more
to share.
In
Gratitude,
