Street Meals
helps alleviate hunger for the homeless population in Atlanta. Every Tuesday from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m., volunteers prepare meals at Kashi Atlanta. The next day at lunchtime, we distribute 350 meals or more in downtown Atlanta. Street Meals is supported by a dedicated corps of volunteers who are committed to seva - selfless service – as an extension of their yoga practice. Teaching people about the joy of community service is a part of our commitment.

We have just begun. We are working with different shelters and organizations with similar goals to expand the assistance available on our streets. We believe that there are no throw-away people.

We also need financial contributions. We can feed someone a good meal for $1.00, so no donation is too small or too large.

We need volunteers to help make and distribute meals, to organize pick-up and delivery of food donations, to pick up donations, and to shop for food that hasn’t been donated. You can also sign up to donate any of the items above, make cookies or muffins, get your employers to donate, or find us a source for bread, chips, drinks, and other food. Get involved and you really can make a difference. Learn to live from the heart and give from the heart.

The Word from the Streets - May 23, 2007

Namaste,

This week, one of our local schools joined us. Each year a group of 10-12 high school students take a week to be “homeless.” These students are given $5 to survive on for an entire week; they sleep outside without the comfort of showers or a change of clothes. During their week, they learn about homelessness as they work at and sometimes stay at shelters and seek other opportunities to earn money.

They joined Kashi Atlanta on Tuesday evening and helped us make our bagged lunches. On Wednesday, they met us at the shelter at Peachtree and Pine to hand out meals to the homeless and then walked to Woodruff Park to join us on our last stop. This was day five for them. This is such an amazing experience that they will not ever forget.

This week, as every week, there are so many stories that our friends share with us.
One of our students, Mom, who has quickly become a “regular” volunteer, is such a hit on the streets. She will be turning 80 next week!!! The guys call her Mom when they see her each week. She lights up many lives, ours included!

Many of the guys want us to know their birthdays … so when it is their day we put up a big fuss and take pictures! Each week we take as many pictures as we can, because a picture is indeed worth a thousand words! So many folks tell us that when they see pictures if themselves with a smile on their face, it gives them hope.

In the words of our Guru Ma Jaya, THERE ARE NO THROWAWAY PEOPLE!!!
In Gratitude,
The Kashi Atlanta Street Meal Team
