Street Meals
helps alleviate hunger for the homeless population in Atlanta. Every Tuesday from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m., volunteers prepare meals at Kashi Atlanta. The next day at lunchtime, we distribute 350 meals or more in downtown Atlanta. Street Meals is supported by a dedicated corps of volunteers who are committed to seva - selfless service – as an extension of their yoga practice. Teaching people about the joy of community service is a part of our commitment.

We have just begun. We are working with different shelters and organizations with similar goals to expand the assistance available on our streets. We believe that there are no throw-away people.

We also need financial contributions. We can feed someone a good meal for $1.00, so no donation is too small or too large.

We need volunteers to help make and distribute meals, to organize pick-up and delivery of food donations, to pick up donations, and to shop for food that hasn’t been donated. You can also sign up to donate any of the items above, make cookies or muffins, get your employers to donate, or find us a source for bread, chips, drinks, and other food. Get involved and you really can make a difference. Learn to live from the heart and give from the heart.

The Word from the Streets - April 25 , 2007

Namaste,

Today was one of those beautiful days out on the streets. Swami Dhumavati, one of the sanyassin at Kashi Ashram in Sebastian, Florida, came out on the streets with us today. The guys loved on her as she did them. When we got to the shelter, we announced that she was here visiting from Kashi and that she lives with Ma! The guys cheered at this. Oh how they love Ma!!! So, needless to say, Swami was a big hit! She was an absolute delight to have her with us. It is such a treat to have one of our Kashi family with us when we FEED EVERYONE.

As the guys come to get a lunch, they come through what we call our receiving line. And this is really what it has become...a weekly reunion of hugs, smiles, stories and laughter. Today we had over 25 volunteers -- so there were lots of us there to greet the guys! It is so beautiful to see how this line has transformed. Years ago, it was a good thing just to get one of the guys to say hello. Now the guys look us right in the eye, smile, and give us a big hug or handshake. Love and kindness are so contagious.

At our second stop, Central Park, we had one of our sweeties, Rosa, pose for a picture with Swami Dhumavati. We have known Rosa since the beginning of this program. She is a real character and we love her like crazy. Sassy as ever! Also, our friend Cookie was there to pose with Swami. The guys and gals at our last stop really lucked out. We had many lunches left over, so everyone scored several.

It's a good day when you can get extra food! We had extra lunches because one of our local schools had a project to make 200 bagged lunches. This school does this for us a few times a year. Actually this school is amazing, part of their curriculum is service work. The kids have to do service work all year long. They do it with so much love, too. Each lunch also had a hand made card inside for the guys! The guys melted as they opened up the beautiful cards made by the kids.

We are forever grateful to serve,

The Ma Jaya's Kashi Atlanta Street Meal Team
