The
Word from the Streets - January
8 , 2003
The
weather outside was gorgeous today. We were blessed
with our Jaya Devi joining us today out on the streets.
Many of us weren't in town last week for the street
meals delivery. Not only did we miss our guys, but
several of them told us that they missed us too. They
were informed of our whereabouts from the volunteers.
Our long lost Jersey was there at Peachtree
and Pine. He told us that he recently got out of the
hospital. We have mixed emotions when we see our people
again after not seeing them for a length of time.
On one hand, we're thrilled to see them again, but
on the other hand...they're back on the streets again.
We always wish that if the guys are missing, that
they are in a better living situation. This does happen
quite often, and the guys come back and visit to share
their stories with us. Chris met a few guys, Henry
and Jazz, today that are really riding life's
fence. They are in a delicate spot, where they could
go either way. I believe that many of us could be
close to that point at some time of our life. This
is where one can breathe in the grace, the gratitude
one has for everything and everyone in their life.
When we pulled up to Central Park, everyone came up
to us for lunches. We usually have to make our way
through the park, finding everyone. Bonnie
was there with a huge smile to greet us. She asked
us if we remembered her. We did, she was the one who
told us about this park. I'm so grateful she did.
We have established some wonderful relationships here.
Connie wasn't here today! This is GREAT news. The
last time I saw her, she told me that her family was
going to pick her up for Christmas and maybe let her
stay longer!!! Everyone who I asked, told me that
her brother or someone came to get her. I am thrilled.
I'll miss her bunches, but I'm so happy she's not
going to be in the park bundled up under her mountain
of blankets. So many of the men asked us to put them
in our prayers. They are so appreciative of the kindness
they receive from all of us.
Woodruff Park wasn't too busy today. The cast of our
regular characters were there. Ganesh Giri came through
with the pictures that David wanted of all
of us. He was upset though, that Melissa wasn't in
any of the pictures...Maybe we can take more.
We met Chief today. What a character he was.
He had a lot to talk about with our Jaya Devi and
Ganesh Giri. I pray he stays safe out there on the
streets. Our older Curtis was there and thrilled
to share his Christmas story with us. He told us that
he hadn't talked to his Mom or any other family member
for over four years. He was ashamed about himself.
This year though, he went to south Georgia to surprise
his family for Christmas. He was so welcomed and loved.
He wanted his family to see what a fine man he developed
into. He's been working a steady job for three years
and lives in a boarding house-like situation. Curtis
has always requested books that he can read to stimulate
his mind. He appreciates everything and everyone.
He is an absolute delight...I'm afraid this author
really wants to spoil him rotten!!
Today was the last regular day Selina will come with
us. She's starting school next week. Her Mom said
that she'll try getting her out of school to come
every now and then. I would love if her whole class
could come with her. It's so beautiful to see Selina
with our guys. There are no judgments on her part.
It's a very realistic experience she takes part in.
She knows the things not to be afraid of and the things
to keep her eyes open for. She's not afraid to love
someone unconditionally. This is so beautiful. Thank
you Jacqueline for doing this with Selina. We all
grow and expand watching Selina...She's such a gift.
Bless you and your family!
Thank you Neem Karoli Baba
Thank you Ma Jaya Sati Bhagavati
Thank you Jaya Devi Bhagavati
Forever grateful to serve,
Sadhu

Street Meals
helps alleviate hunger for the homeless population in
Atlanta. Every Tuesday from 7:30 - 8:30 p.m., volunteers
prepare meals at Kashi Atlanta. The next day at lunchtime,
we distribute 300 meals or more in downtown Atlanta.
Street Meals is supported by a dedicated corps of volunteers
who are committed to seva - selfless service
as an extension of their yoga practice. Teaching people
about the joy of community service is a part of our
commitment.
We have just begun. We are working with different shelters
and organizations with similar goals to expand the assistance
available on our streets. We believe that there are
no throw-away people.
We also need financial contributions. We can feed someone
a good meal for $1.00, so no donation is too small or
too large.
We need volunteers to help make and distribute meals,
to organize pick-up and delivery of food donations,
to pick up donations, and to shop for food that hasnt
been donated. You can also sign up to donate any of
the items above, make cookies or muffins, get your employers
to donate, or find us a source for bread, chips, drinks,
and other food. Get involved and you really can make
a difference. Learn to live from the heart and give
from the heart.

Mahadev Bittner, our Service Programs Coordinator.
