Street Meals
helps alleviate hunger for the homeless population in Atlanta. Every Tuesday from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m., volunteers prepare meals at Kashi Atlanta. The next day at lunchtime, we distribute 350 meals or more in downtown Atlanta. Street Meals is supported by a dedicated corps of volunteers who are committed to seva - selfless service – as an extension of their yoga practice. Teaching people about the joy of community service is a part of our commitment.

We have just begun. We are working with different shelters and organizations with similar goals to expand the assistance available on our streets. We believe that there are no throw-away people.

We also need financial contributions. We can feed someone a good meal for $1.00, so no donation is too small or too large.

We need volunteers to help make and distribute meals, to organize pick-up and delivery of food donations, to pick up donations, and to shop for food that hasn’t been donated. You can also sign up to donate any of the items above, make cookies or muffins, get your employers to donate, or find us a source for bread, chips, drinks, and other food. Get involved and you really can make a difference. Learn to live from the heart and give from the heart.

The Word from the Streets - January 3, 2007

Namaste and Happy New Year!

It was a rich day out on the streets today. Although those we serve may have little materially and suffer great hardships, there is an abundance of love and life on the streets. This is our family that is very dear to us and it was great to see everyone, spend a little time with everyone, and see how everyone is coming into the New Year. And, of course, we passed out all the great peanut butter and jelly sandwiches today and fed hungry bellies.

Our Vincent, who we haven't seen for a while, told us a Christmas story of how a rich man in a very expensive car came to Woodruff Park over Christmas and handed out to everyone envelopes
that had five and ten dollar bills in them.

Our Russel received a pair of work boots donated by Ron and Karuna. He is so grateful, calling them his adoptive parents -- of course, he is a big boy! He just feels so much gratitude and love for them caring enough to take time out of their lives and give a gift that means so much and is so needed. And that is service, what may cost you next to nothing -- a little bit of your time and effort, even a smile in the moment -- might mean the world to someone else.

Our Gina in Central Park gave us the news that she had had her baby and that right now, her grandmother is caring for her. Gina has gotten herself a job at a major grocery store and applied for public housing. If she can stay clean and sober, she will be able to get her children back and hopefully make it off the streets. This is much like our Julia had done months ago. With much courage and by working hard, she created a new life for herself with her husband and family and they now have a home. We keep Gina in our prayers and hope everything works out for her and her family.

There are too many to name everyone here, but all are in our hearts.

We thank beloved Guru Ma, Baba and Kashi for giving us the greatest gift of all – the ability to serve. And maybe, an even greater gift, the desire to serve. It is so easy.

“ The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the greatest intention.”-Kahil Gibran

All our Thanks, light and love,

The Kashi Atlanta Street Meals Team
