Kashi
Atlanta Holiday Street Meals -
December 8 and 9, 2006
Namaste,
This weekend was our annual Holiday Street Meals event!!
After months of planning and gathering items, it all
came together with such beauty. The success of this
event is made possible by everyone’s hard work
and generosity.
On Friday evening over one hundred folks came to Kashi
Atlanta and helped assemble 400 packages for our friends
on the streets! There were mounds of blankets, socks,
scarves, gloves and endless heaps of candies, cookies
and personal care products. In addition to these items,
there were many more necessary and fun items for the
guys…and gals.
All
of the kids who showed up for the event kept the fun
and enthusiasm of the evening's activities going as
they ran around having a blast helping and doing “kid
stuff!” Doing service work is such grace for
everyone, but it is beautiful to see kids being touched
by this type of service. Many of our kids have been
doing this for many years, and service is just part
of their lives. It is such a gift to teach a child
about serving someone in need.
On
Saturday, we all gathered to deliver the goodies.
We planned our car pool teams and set off to downtown
Atlanta. We packed the cars full, so people had the
chance to talk and exchange stories. Once we decided
how we would distribute the packages at the shelter,
the line flowed beautifully. We had our pack of carolers
at the end of the line making beautiful music and
getting the guys to join in. The guys were so appreciative
for everything about this day. The new people that
joined us did beautifully with the guys.
The
next stop was one of our parks that we go to every
week with lunches. Many of our regulars were there
waiting for us! After passing out the packages we
went up the hill to visit one of our dear ladies that
wasn’t feeling well. As we started to sing her
request for a Christmas carol, there were tears running
down her face. Everyone up on top of the hill was
filled with gratitude and smiles.
We
truly are so graced by these gems letting us into
their community and into their hearts.
