Street Meals
helps alleviate hunger for the homeless population in Atlanta. Every Tuesday from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m., volunteers prepare meals at Kashi Atlanta. The next day at lunchtime, we distribute 350 meals or more in downtown Atlanta. Street Meals is supported by a dedicated corps of volunteers who are committed to seva - selfless service – as an extension of their yoga practice. Teaching people about the joy of community service is a part of our commitment.

We have just begun. We are working with different shelters and organizations with similar goals to expand the assistance available on our streets. We believe that there are no throw-away people.

We also need financial contributions. We can feed someone a good meal for $1.00, so no donation is too small or too large.

We need volunteers to help make and distribute meals, to organize pick-up and delivery of food donations, to pick up donations, and to shop for food that hasn’t been donated. You can also sign up to donate any of the items above, make cookies or muffins, get your employers to donate, or find us a source for bread, chips, drinks, and other food. Get involved and you really can make a difference. Learn to live from the heart and give from the heart.

Kashi Atlanta Holiday Street Meals - December 8 and 9, 2006

Namaste,

This weekend was our annual Holiday Street Meals event!! After months of planning and gathering items, it all came together with such beauty. The success of this event is made possible by everyone’s hard work and generosity.

On Friday evening over one hundred folks came to Kashi Atlanta and helped assemble 400 packages for our friends on the streets! There were mounds of blankets, socks, scarves, gloves and endless heaps of candies, cookies and personal care products. In addition to these items, there were many more necessary and fun items for the guys…and gals.

All of the kids who showed up for the event kept the fun and enthusiasm of the evening's activities going as they ran around having a blast helping and doing “kid stuff!” Doing service work is such grace for everyone, but it is beautiful to see kids being touched by this type of service. Many of our kids have been doing this for many years, and service is just part of their lives. It is such a gift to teach a child about serving someone in need.

On Saturday, we all gathered to deliver the goodies. We planned our car pool teams and set off to downtown Atlanta. We packed the cars full, so people had the chance to talk and exchange stories. Once we decided how we would distribute the packages at the shelter, the line flowed beautifully. We had our pack of carolers at the end of the line making beautiful music and getting the guys to join in. The guys were so appreciative for everything about this day. The new people that joined us did beautifully with the guys.

The next stop was one of our parks that we go to every week with lunches. Many of our regulars were there waiting for us! After passing out the packages we went up the hill to visit one of our dear ladies that wasn’t feeling well. As we started to sing her request for a Christmas carol, there were tears running down her face. Everyone up on top of the hill was filled with gratitude and smiles.

We truly are so graced by these gems letting us into their community and into their hearts.
